The BoT analyzed the situation of Thai durian fruit market. Thailand has been the world’s top durian exporter over the past 10 years, particularly to the major market in China with the significant growth over the past five years.
China’s appetite for durian has increased global demand for the uniquely pungent tropical fruit by 400 per cent, with Southeast Asian exporters looking to a regional trade deal for help to sell even more, according to HSBC.
Some say it’s sticky-sweet, others say it smells like socks. Love it or hate it, the appetite for durians is growing voraciously — especially in China.

Black Thorn, also known as O Shei, varies a lot in terms of size, but can be recognized by it is perfectly plump pumpkin shape and squat little stem, about as long as a thumb. The bottom has a little belly-button indent that protects the durian’s dried up flower stamen from breaking off as it grows, creating a blackened “thorn” that protrudes and gives the durian its name.
Monthong durians are large fruits, averaging 3 to 5 kilograms, and generally have an oval to cylindrical, tapered shape, sometimes found with irregular bumps, creating a heart-like appearance. The fruit’s surface is covered in pointed, densely packed triangular spikes and ranges in color from pale green, light brown, to golden-brown. Underneath the spiny surface, there is a white, spongy interior with multiple chambers encasing lobes of flesh.
Durian is a richly pungent tropical fruit that is commonly referred to as the king of all fruit. Musang King, known as Mao Shan Wang or D197, is dubbed the “king of kings”
